Day 5 – Your Book’s Acknowledgements

5 Nov

Most published books have an acknowledgements page in which the author thanks those who he/she feels played a role in the making of the book or development of the author. Until you have to write one, it seems simple; just say thank you to all the important people in your life. But when the task comes before you, like me, you may find it a little more difficult that imagined.

With each book that I publish, writing the acknowledgements becomes harder and harder. I don’t want to keep saying the same thing over and over again. In addition, after you’ve thanked people a few times, this section of the book seems less important. I’ve noticed that some authors with many titles to their credit either forgo the acknowledgements or keep it short.

Writing acknowledgements can also be stressful because you don’t want to leave anyone out, but also don’t want to list every person you know. So, who do you thank? Who should be included in this section of your book?

There are no right or wrong answers to these questions, but I have come to take this perspective: Whomever contributed to my life during the process of writing that book, especially as it relates to that particular book, should be mentioned. There are good friends of mine who for that one title were not involved, so I don’t feel led to include their names. On the other hand, there are associates of mine who may have provided me with a word of wisdom during the process who I feel should be recognized.

The most important aspect of acknowledgements is letting the world know that you are not and island and your book is the result of the love, support, and sacrifices of others whose name does not appear on the by line. Whether your name appears or not in my book, if you are a positive part of my life, I thank you and appreciate your presence.

This was very touching, got me a little emotional. My 2nd novel has like 3 pages of acknowledgements. More support will push it to 4 pages and I still have 100 pages to go…………… go gooo ……gooooooo!!!!
